Great Lakes Jamboree 2012 On behalf of the staff I would like to extend an invitation to all Scouts, Scouters, Guides and Guiders within the World Brotherhood of Scouting and Guiding to attend and be part of this wonderful Jamboree experience.

The dates for this Jamboree of Fun, Challenge and Adventure are
July 14 – 21, 2012.

Great Lakes Jamboree, the longest continuous running Jambo in Ontario will be at Camp BEL at Dorchesternear London Ontario!! Building on the great Program successes we had last Jambo, we are adding 4 newVillages for the youth and Leaders to enjoy. We have also modified a couple of the events based on the feedback from Leaders and Youth at last Jambo. When you read the full package you will notice that the hike program and canoe programs have been tweaked based on feedback and participation levels last year. The main on-site villages have also been modified to allow for more hands on time for each youth using the village. Brent and his team have modified the Brownsea challenge for older youth. We offer a full 5 nights of Subcamp program with 2 nights of camp wide program. There are repel towers, climbing wall, archery, rifle ranges, blacksmith forge, Leathercraft, handicraft, Dutch oven cooking, Bruce Trail hikes, canoe, Geocache adventure, macro pioneering, ScoutCraft Skills Village and much more. A Woodbadge Part 1 for Leaders will be offered as well as a separate Leader event area. Special Opening and Closing ceremonies will add to your Jamboree Adventure.

Cost for the Jamboree is $235 / youth, $110 /leader, plus your troop registration fee. This includes everything except your food and how you get to the site and home again. We are always looking to maintain the price as low as possible while providing the best activities and experience for your Troop. As a team, we feel this is still the best deal anywhere for your youth in the summer of 2012.

Scouters, I urge you to read and share the details inside of this package with your youth to see how you and your Troop can have a GREAT summer Jamboree experience. We have grown in numbers for the last 3 Jamborees with 520 Scouts and Scouters attending 2010. This year we have as a goal, 600 on site. To get this 600 on site we allow 725 to register since we usually have about a 20% shrink from original numbers.

Act Quick! We have a registration limit of 725. Don't miss out!

Yours In Scouting

GREAT LAKES JAMBOREE PROGRAM

The program at the Jamboree is divided into a series of villages and day trips designed to allow your youth the maximum amount of program during their stay at the Jamboree. Even though villages are designed to be experienced in a single 3 hour time period, it is not generally possible to do everything in the village in 1 visit so you will have to discuss the various options carefully with your youth. Some villages are available for more than 1 scheduling time per troop. Full details about schedules will be e-mailed to units that fill in their registration form. Listed below is a quick outline of each village to give you an idea of what to expect. Unless otherwise noted, these on-site villages are designed to provide fun for youth of all Scout ages including Cubs who have completed 3rd year and are coming into the Scouts.

VILLAGE 1 – “Cooking With Crazy”

Each station is designed to allow hands on experience, as well as teaching of various “old time “ and “current” techniques and Scouting skills. E.g. are Dutch Oven cooking (and EATING of what is cooked). Participants will do the majority of the work from cutting the veggies and meats to adjusting the temperatures with adding or removing coal.

VILLAGE 2 – “Down at the Forge”

We have 3 blacksmiths and a tinsmith that have hands on training and making for youth and Leaders also. Participants will hand make a project during their stay in the forge area. A perennial hit that will double in size for 2012.

VILLAGE 3 - Adventure Village

In this area we will have the Repel towers, a climbing wall, Ariel runway, archery ranges, BB rifle ranges, Orienteering, 3 way tug o war and fire brigade wars. No way to be bored here!

VILLAGE 4 - HANDICRAFT VILLAGE

In the Handicraft Village area, youth will have the opportunity to create special Scout age craft items. Specialty woggle making, T-shirt silk screen with area logos, woodcarving, porcelain painting (a huge hit in past years), personalized button making and much more.

VILLAGE 5 – LEATHERWORKS VILLAGE

In the LeatherWorks leather crafts such as arm bands, key fobs with special Jambo stamps and other hand crafted leather items will be made.

VILLAGE 6 – “Back to Brownsea”

This is an Overnight adventure for 18 youth at a time. No leaders. Youth hike into the event area after breakfast and set up camp using gear very much like BP had at Brownsea. Cooking is done on wood fires and a full day and night program of instruction and fun await the youth adventurous enough to sign up for this. Youth must have completed 1 full year in the Scout program to be eligible for this area.

VILLAGE 7 - What’s it? Village

A series of 25 Fun, Goofy events, many of which are self-directed that have proven to be a hit with Scout age youth. We also have a monkey bridge and high wire walk. A great village to hit twice.

VILLAGE 8 – MACRO PIONEERING Village

No small stuff here. Over the course of the week we will construct a 3 major projects; a 50 foot long bridge, a 25 foot signal tower and a 20 foot whatchmacallit. We will be using 8 to 10 foot spars 6 – 10 inches in diameter. Troops that choose this event will enter the area and continue building from where the last crew left off. This can be chosen as a ½ day or whole day event depending on your wishes. At the end of the Jamboree we will try to have as many people who worked on the projects actually on the projects for pictures.

VILLAGE 9 – Geocaching Adventure

Start with a trip all over the Jambo site and from there venture out into the local community. Can you find your way to all the caches? Do you get the special Troop award to show you are superior hunters? This is an event that is planned as a whole day event but can be cut in half if that works better for your Troop planning.

VILLAGE 10 – First Aid certification

St. John Standard first aid will be offered to 3rd year Scouts working on their Chief Scout Award. There will be a MAX of 15 Scouts per 2 day course. At time of printing we have an instructor on board to run this course for us at a very reduced rate. If we lose the instructor, this Village will not run as paying the whole fee would be cost prohibitive. Please note that 3rd year Scouts will have first crack at the spots being offered. If they are not filled we will offer the spots at the Jamboree on a first come, first served basis. The classes are scheduled to run Sunday / Monday, Wednesday/Thursday and Friday / Saturday. Scouts who sign up for the classes may miss out on some of the other offsite villages that are happening the same day depending on what your Troop picks when they do their program choices.

VILLAGE 11 – Scoutcraft Skills for youth village

This village is specifically designed for younger Scouts but very enjoyable by all. Scouts will learn many of the “Old” Scoutcraft skills that have fallen by the wayside. Basic pioneering, knots, first aid, knife sharpening, compass work, trail marking and reading, basic edible plants instruction, fire lighting, and so much more. The village is very hands-on and allows youth to build on their new skills knowledge back home in Troop.

CANOE PROGRAM VILLAGE

There are 2 levels in the canoe program. We will offer a full day program consisting of ½ instruction for beginners and ½ day regatta to put into practice the skills just learned. The second level is an advanced canoe trip for Scouts with prior canoe tripping and serious skill level. (Paddler badge minimum requirement). This trip is not for rookies. Further details on the day program and the trip will be available in the Program Selection package. Minimum registration for this trip is 35 youth.

MYSTERY TOURS

OutripThe area around the camp lends itself to several self- discovery cultural / historical based tours. You will be loaded on a bus in the AM and taken all around the area, stopping at local areas of interest. We won’t tell you the sites, but we can tell you that we have found 2 great ones. For lunch will be stopping at a fast food outlet (cost is Troop item) and you will be back at the camp in time for supper. This trip is free, all admission costs for areas will be paid by the Jamboree; all bus costs are covered. Time in the bus is short compared to the time you spend checking out the areas.

HIKE PROGRAM

Day hike is a 10 K hike on the Bruce trail suitable for Scouts and adults in relatively good shape. You will be carrying your own gear including water. All trips are bused to and from hike areas. Leaders are not mandatory on the hike.

Water Park OUTTRIP

All units will be scheduled to go on a day trip to an area Water Park. There is no added cost for the trip or for the admission fee. Lunch will be provided. It is part of the Jambo package. You will have unlimited use of the water events and 2 added areas. You will leave camp by bus after breakfast and return just prior to supper.

SPECIAL NIGHT SUBCAMP PROGRAM

Mardis Gras Night

This will run from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. The Mardis Gras is split over 2 nights. Two nights of crazy fun and events that run rain or shine (but not in First Class Thunderstorms). Game Show night will consist of each Troop running their favourite “Participation Event” one night and being a contestant the next. You can go nuts with costumes, prizes etc. Events should be easy to set up, fun to run and participate in and somehow linked to Mardis Gras if possible. Full “guidelines” on Webpage after registration. Special prizes and awards as well as tons of fun plus the opportunity to make new friends will make this a special part of the Jamboree program.

Adult Only Villages
WoodBadge Part 1

We will be offering a Scout Section Woodbadge Part 1 on the Sunday / Monday of the Jamboree. We can handle up to 24 Leaders MAX. Leaders interested will need to fill in a training application form and send it in.
Paddle Painting
This was the best attended area at Jambo 2010. Each Leader will be given a plain paddle and with the use of a stencil, paint their paddle. We have an artist on hand to help with getting the stencil on the paddle and tips for painting. Great way to de-stress! NO talent required. Usually takes about a day and a half.

LOCATION

Camp BEL is just EAST of London Ontario, 2 hours from Detroit, 2 1/2 hours from Niagara Falls & 2 hrs from Toronto. Full map to all registrants. The camping grounds are flat with a clay and gravel base covered by a layer of timothy and grass. There is limited tree shelter from the north. Subcamps are in open areas. Municipal water is available in Subcamp common area, a first aid station is located in the Subcamp area, and there is round the clock security on the site.

Directions

ARRIVALS and DEPARTURES

Please note that with the exception of overseas Troops, no Troops will be allowed on site until after 9:30 on the morning of the 14th (Saturday) and the Jamboree runs until 10:30 PM on the 21st so departures will be SUNDAY morning the 22nd by noon.

LEADER RATIO and FEES

The minimum leader complement is 2 per troop. Please check and abide by your Council, Area and Country regulations.

A growing trend in Troops is to have Leaders rotate in and out for part weeks so that youth can get to camp and Leader obligations can be met. That is fine and we have a policy of only charging you for the actual leaders present. If you have a schedule that has coverage of 2 leaders per day with a small overlap of a night here and there we call that 2 leaders. We use Scouts Honour when it comes to this issue. In this case we would provide 2 sets of scarf / badge and you can purchase extras for the rotating leaders.

Leader fees are $110 per Leader.

Note: Registration

This Jamboree is ALL electronic from this point on. We will do all of our communication via E Mail. I realize that not all have E mail BUT, someone in your group does. ALL unit updates and forms and maps etc will be downloadable from the Jambo homepage. PLEASE list an E MAIL CONTACT on the form when registering. It will greatly improve communication for all concerned. If you paper register and do not list one , we will call you looking for one. If you change your e mail address, please contact us with the new one. There is a spot for a second e mail to be listed. It would be a huge help if you had a second Leader on the list.

Camp fee is $235 (Canadian) per youth attending. There is a $100 Troop Registration fee which is NON REFUNDABLE. Fifty dollars of the $100 can be used as a credit with your second payment. This $100 must be sent with your registration form if registering by snail mail. If E Mail registering (PREFERRED), you must mail the $100 within 2 weeks to confirm the E Mail or you will be contacted to confirm your desire to attend. If you back out you lose the $100 Troop pre registration. The camp fee is divided into 2 payments to make it easier for youth to afford. We give the full bank exchange rate that we get on foreign registration monies.

The first $ 135 per youth payment and the $110/ leader is due November 1, 2011. THIS PAYMENT IS NON REFUNDABLE and NON CREDITABLE. If you are just getting the package and it is past Nov. 1, 2011, don't panic. Call me to see if there is still space and to let me know you are coming and send off the $100 Troop fee and make arrangements for the $135 per youth. The second $100 per youth is due March 1st, 2012. Again, if you get the package late, call me to see if there is still room. At this point, this fee is now also NON REFUNDABLE. ( In the event of a physician supported claim or verifiable extreme family crisis, this portion of the fee IS refundable.) You may substitute youth right up to 2 weeks prior the Jamboree with no penalty, as long as you e mail me with a SUBSTITUTION form and the sub accepts the program set up for the original youth. You can also ADD youth and leaders to the Jamboree (but please keep this to a minimum as it really adds to our paperwork), IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE, up to June 1st, 2012. Forms for program choices, medical etc. will be on the website no later than September 1, 2011. For program picks, the sooner you fill in the web form, the better. Some areas may fill up and if you wait, you will miss out.

FULL DETAILS OF DATES AND REGISTRATION/ SUBSTITUTION POLICY WILL BE SENT TO CONTACT LEADER
